Which Covid Test Is Right For You?

ANTIGEN TESTS

Antigen tests, such as the BinaxNOW Covid-19 antigen test, can be performed quickly with results available in 15 minutes. These tests are used to determine if a person is infectious. This kind of test will not be able to tell whether you have been previously infected with Covid, nor is it recommended for individuals experiencing severe symptoms or complications of Covid-19 infection. Such individuals should seek emergency medical attention. Individuals who have signs of illness but receive a negative rapid Covid antigen result should consult with their doctor or the health department for guidance on further testing and isolation precautions.

For Rapid Antigen Testing, we use The Abbott Lab BinaxNOW Covid-19 Antigen test.

This test has been approved for use by the FDA for Covid testing under an Emergency Use Authorization, and can detect the presence of Covid-19 Antigens within days of exposure. This test requires a specimen which is obtained from the nasopharynx using a small, soft, flexible swab that’s unlikely to cause discomfort. However, keeping your head and body still during the swabbing process will result in a more pleasant experience. Our specimen collectors are trained and experienced and will work with you and your family to ensure the most positive experience and the most accurate result.

Rapid Covid-19 Antigen testing is used to screen for current infection with the Covid-19 virus. However, this test cannot rule out co-infection with another bacteria or virus, such as influenza. Although false positive results are possible, they are rare. False negative tests are more common and may require additional testing from your doctor. *A note about international travel: It is important to know which test your destination country requires. Be aware that many countries require a nasopharyngeal specimen. Over-the-counter or self-administered tests are generally not acceptable for travel.

PCR TESTS

PCR molecular testing is a more specific test that utilizes a specimen obtained from the nose, nasopharynx or throat and is sent to a lab for processing. Your doctor may recommend this test if you are experiencing signs of Covid infection, even if your rapid antigen test is negative. PCR testing may also be advised for individuals who do not show any symptoms of illness, but have had a negative rapid antigen test following a known exposure to the Covid virus. Your workplace may require a PCR test before returning to work after you have been ill with Covid-19 infection.  It is important to know which test your employer will require so that you can return to work safely.

For PCR testing, we use the Accula Medical POC test.

This is is a rapid RT-PCR test approved for use by the FDA under an Emergency Use Authorization. The test meets PCR testing requirements for international travel. Results are available in 30 minutes. A digital report of your result is provided, as well as a patient information sheet regarding the test. A hard copy of results available upon request.
